DESCRIPTION

Nothing is more important to the success of the i2 program than the training of a school’s teachers. Our two-day workshops introduce teachers to the basic concepts of project-based learning and then train those teachers in the curriculum from one of our immersive STEM courses. Over the two days, teachers work in groups using the engineering design process to collaboratively solve a series of problems culminating in a final group project. Teachers are taken through each of the key activities so that they can experience the challenges in the exact same way that they will lead their own students during STEM Week or i2 Month.

i2 teacher training is designed for teachers of all backgrounds and disciplines with the vast majority of teachers trained to date (over 70%) from non-STEM disciplines.

RESULTS TO DATE

Overwhelmingly positive feedback has consistently defined our training and reaffirmed our comprehensive and hands-on approach to professional development with over 99% of all teachers reporting that the workshop was “very good (77.1%)” or “good (22.2%)”. Teachers comment that the workshops are very different from their typical PD as they are given the materials and time to be actively engaged in the STEM challenges and then plan for implementing the immersive i2 program. The impact of our training has been shown to go beyond our own curriculum as teachers consistently report that the workshops enable them to not only successfully lead the i2 courses in their own schools but also that the training helps them with their teaching throughout the year.

99% of teachers rated the professional development sessions as very good or good.

73% of teachers trained by i2 have been from non-STEM backgrounds.
