What did you eat and drink today? Who prepared the food? Where did your beverage come from? What would happen if you, or others in your community, didn’t have easy access to food and water? 

Food and water are basic human needs--and access to food and water is a human right. Food and water can be deeply personal, tied to tradition and family, to memories, and to health. Yet, many people across the world, and within our own neighborhoods can be disconnected from food and water. They may not know where their food and water comes from, or may not have easy access to food and water when they need it. Students and educators have their own personal experiences and ideas around the topic of food and water, which will serve as a jumping off point for exploring and constructing shared understandings of food and water systems, justice, and sustainability. Students may choose to explore how food and water are accessed, processed, transported, and distributed in their local communities, why food and water are basic needs of organisms, the role of food and water in culture, or local and global issues of equity related to food and water. Student investigations might include cooking meals using ingredients they have grown or developing a greywater system for their school. Together, students and educators will shape their investigations, grappling with issues of access, economics, and ethics as they form their own questions about food and water, and design project experiences to answer the complex questions they pose.
