Program Description
Mass STEM Week 2019
Massachusetts STEM Week 2019 takes place from October 21st to 25th and is organized by the Executive Office of Education and the STEM Advisory Council. It is a statewide effort to boost the interest, awareness and ability for all learners to envision themselves in STEM education and employment opportunities, and compliment the formal instruction happening in the Commonwealth beyond STEM week.
The theme for the second annual statewide STEM Week is “See Yourself in STEM.” Women, people of color, first-generation students, low-income individuals, English language learners, and people with disabilities are underrepresented in STEM industries and make up an increasing portion of the overall workforce, but the demographics of STEM fields have remained largely the same. We need more young people to see themselves in STEM.
i2 Learning
In partnership with schools and school districts, i2 Learning transforms middle school classrooms into 21st century STEM learning labs with a series of immersive, project-based STEM courses developed by MIT and other leading STEM organization. The i2 Learning courses replace all regularly scheduled classes during Massachusetts STEM Week and each course is selected to map to state and national standards. To effectively bring the i2 STEM Week courses to schools, i2 runs a series of two-day professional workshops for teachers across the state and provides all necessary materials and supplies to each school.
Based on the success of i2 Learning's Boston STEM Week, i2 worked with the Commonwealth to create the inaugural Massachusetts STEM Week in 2018. This year i2 will have trained over 1,000 teachers in more than 75 schools to reach over 22,000 students across the state.
